Unable to initialise( Format ) MSA disk.

I created a volume from HP P2000 G3 MSA and presented it to windows 2008 R2 server. While initialising ( Formatting)  disk-manager stops responding. after few minutes an error message pops up " The semaphore timeout period has expired". Same error occurs if you try to format from command line using Diskpart.

You can see the Event ID 10 in windows system event log.

Source        :Virtual Disk Service
Level          : Error
Event ID     : 10
Description :

“VDS fails to write boot code on a disk during clean operation. Error code: 80070015@02070008" .

This error occurs when the MSA runs out of writable cache memory. To find the MSA un-writable cache memory status execute the following command from CLI:

# show unwritable-cache
Unwritable System Cache
Percent of unwritable cache in controller A: 98

Percent of unwritable cache in controller B: 98

If the Percent of un-writable cache is more than zero, execute the following command to clear the cache.

#clear chace.

  1. Thanks for taking the time to write this! I ran into the same issue after some P2000 G3 gear was decommissioned, reconfigured and reused. I spent several hours banging my head then googled the error and this popped up and was the exact issue and resolution.

  2. Thanks for the tip! Had the same problem!

  3. Thanks so much for posting this - After many, many hours I stumbled across this post - solved the issue. What a legend!
